Syria has Done More than Defend Itself: Syria has Exposed the Big “Israeli” Myth of Invincibility

This morning has marked the biggest ever “Israeli” attack on Syrian sovereignty since the beginning of the Syria conflict in 2011. The events proceeded as follows:

–“Israel” shoots down alleged “Iranian” (most likely Iranian made but not Iranian operated) reconnaissance drone over Syrian territory.

–Syria targets “Israeli” jets attempting to strike a Syrian military base. Syria successfully downs an “Israeli” F-16 fighter jet. The jet crashed in northern “Israel”.

–“Israel” responds to the downing of the jet with a large scale missile strike targeting “12” military targets in Syria. Syria’s missile defence systems intercept several of these missiles.

There are also unverified reports circulating, indicating that Syria may have also downed an “Israeli” helicopter.

The following is the official statement on the incidents from the Syrian government:

“The army air defense confronted a new Israeli aggression on one of the military positions in the central area and hit more than one aircraft.

A military source told SANA that the Israeli enemy on Saturday dawn launched a new aggression against one of the military bases in the central area, and the army air defense confronted the aggression and hit more than one aircraft.

The source added that the Israeli enemy repeated its aggression on some positions in the southern area, and that the army air defense confronted the aggression and thwarted it.

The Israeli aggression came after the Army General Command announced that the Syrian Arab Army eradicated Daesh (ISIS) terrorist organization and the groups affiliated to it from large areas in the pocket extending from the southeast of Khanaser in Aleppo countryside to the west of Sinjar in Idleb countryside to the north of al-Sa’an in Hama countryside.

Meanwhile, media of the Israeli enemy admitted that the Syrian air defense shot down an F-16 jet over Galilee in occupied Palestine and that its pilots were injured, confirming the closure of parts of the Israeli airspace for aviation after downing the warplane.

Sirens were heard at the settlements of the Israeli enemy as a state of panic prevailed among the settlers and shelters were opened, and all roads leading to the settlements north of the occupied territories were closed, according to sources from inside Palestine.

Media outlets of the Israeli enemy said that Israel demanded Russian and US urgent intervention to contain the situation.

They added that downing the Israeli F-16 jet over the occupied Palestinian territories means a crack in the Israeli excellence”.

The most significant parts of the statement are the last two paragraphs. By far the most important is when Syria states that even “Israeli” regime media is admitting that the successful downing of the F-16 and intercepting of “Israeli” missiles by Damascus “means a crack in the Israeli excellence”. As the Zionist regime uses mythology to justify its occupation of Palestine, it is perhaps only natural that such a regime should build up its own modern mythology to propagate that occupation, as well as its partial occupation of Syria. In the case of “Israel’s” military, Tel Aviv has created and spread a myth about how its military machine is far superior to that of all of her neighbours. This is the myth of “Israeli” invincibility.

This myth does not explain why Tel Aviv was unable to win a long and largely forgotten war with Egypt which was fought between 1967 and 1970, the aptly named the War of Attrition. But moreover, this myth could not explain why comparatively poorly armed Hezbollah fighters were able to win their war with “Israel” in 2006, thus achieving the goal of kicking the last occupying forces out of southern Lebanon following the incomplete withdrawal of 2000.

The 2006 war in particular, was a moment of truth for a regime in love with its own mythology. The entity whose armed forces “could not be beaten” were beaten. Today’s downing of an “Israeli” jet by the forces of the Syrian Arab Army has more long term psychological value than it does strategic value.

A country, the Syrian Arab Republic that was supposed to cease to exist several years ago, is not only still very much in existence, but in spite of fighting a war on multiple fronts, it is able to defend itself against “Israeli” attacks with success, even while Syria’s weapons systems are far older than those belonging to the occupier regime. In a real life battle between David and Goliath, David has scored a bit hit against the occupier Goliath.

For “Israel” which relies on its myth of invincibility to mobilise a conscripted armed forces which is so desperate for strength that it conscripts not only men and women – including religious conscientious objectors, this is a big blow that should not be underestimated. When “Israel” begins to lose more and more battles of its own making, many of its conscripts could begin to reject the war mongering of their leaders and thus, the state could eventually collapse as it requires large scale manpower to occupy Palestine and part of Syria on a round the clock basis. A nation that requires constant war to survive, can simply not survive forever. Peace is ultimately the only sustainable form of human existence, wars will always eventually come to an end. “Israel” requires its enemies to lose every war, but the opponents of occupation need only score a few key victories to dispel the myths upon which the occupation is sustained.

The second most important part of the statement from Damascus concerns the “Israeli” media, which Syria always monitors closely, reporting that Tel Aviv has gone crying to the US and Russia about the attack. Throughout the Syrian conflict, both Russia and the United States have stayed clear of all issues involving direct “Israeli” attacks on Syria, as well as Syrian defensive measures taken in retaliation.

While Russia has made it so that the Syrian Arab Army and Turkish Army have never crossed paths in anger and while Russia has also generally helped the Syrian Arab Army and US to avoid direct confrontation (this week’s alleged US attack on the SAA was in fact, an attack on PMUs that did not inform Russia of their whereabouts), Russia has never done anything to overtly restrain “Israel’s” illegal attacks on Syria, but nor has Russian done anything to increase or decrease the level of Syria’s response to these attacks.

In this sense, because the conflict between Syria and “Israel” goes back to 1967, or perhaps even 1948 depending on one’s perspective, Russia, whose mandate is to fight non-state terrorism in Syria, does not technically cover this old conflict which has been manifestly incorporated into the new conflict.

Similarly, the US which had been focused on the pro-“Israeli” goal of regime change and is now focused on the pro-“Israeli” secondary goal of dividing Syria, has not become involved. The reason for this is clear enough: at a time when even many of Syria’s enemies hate “Israel”, the US tries to avoid doing anything to reveal the fact that as a state, the Syrian Arab Republic is the last Arab state which consistently stands up to the Zionist entity. This could create the kind of Arab unity around Palestine that the Syrian government has always argued for. The US cannot risk bringing this kind of Arab unity about, when Washington’s own regional goals are predicated on sowing sectarian divisions.

Thus, when it comes to the battles between Syria and “Israel”, both countries are largely on their own and as such, Syria is holding its own, against great odds. The closest thing to an official statement on the attack from the “Israeli” side has been the following Tweet:

The statement which lies about “Israeli” sovereignty being violated as the drone in question was flying in occupied Syria, more importantly blames Iran for the events. This is a sign that “Israel”, a country which invested so much over the decades into destroying the Syrian Arab Republic, cannot even admit that it was Syria, a country still able to stand up to “Israeli” aggression. Instead they blame far away Iran, because they cannot face the fact that Syria can and will stand up for itself and has been doing so recently, more than ever.
